As she walked to their table, arm in arm with John, the looks and comments did not stop.  They stopped for a moment on the way and she heard an older man at a nearby table remark, “I wonder how much that costs.”  His wife slapped at his arm and droned, “Even if you could afford it, you wouldn’t be able to do anything with it.” Mandy laughed, flashed her hand at the woman twice, denoting 10, and then mouthed “Thousand,” winked and they went on their way.

Reaching their table, greetings were exchanged and introductions made. Things were going very smoothly until Mandy tried to introduce herself to one woman who had a little too much to drink.

As Mandy extended her hand, the woman snarled, “Yes, EVERYONE knows who YOU are.”  Mandy smiled, looked the woman straight in the eye and replied, “Yes, I am sure they do. You DO know there is more than one way to make an impression, don’t you?” With that most everyone just ignored the woman, except for her poor husband who was stuck with her.

Dinner ended and they decided to have a drink out on the patio before heading up to the room.  John headed over to collect the necklace and earrings, and Mandy went out to the patio to find a spot for them.

As she was leaving, John said a little too loudly,” Mandy would you be a good girl and order me a drink?” Mandy stopped in her tracks turned to John and said, “I will be happy to darling.  Your usual, I suppose?” All the while, shooting him a look most everyone saw as a loving gesture that said to John “You are going to pay dearly for that one.”

John reached the counter and his friend explained that there was a major screw-up and someone else had the necklace set; there was nothing that could be done about it.  After a few minutes of explanation, John went out to the patio empty handed.

He found Mandy and joined her on one of the benches around the firepit. There were two glasses of wine in front of them and John began to explain what had happened.  Mandy seemed to take it very well.

When John finished, she lightly touched his arm and purred to him, “Don’t worry darling.  We are just going to have to stop in town on the way home and you can be a GOOD BOY and buy me something very expensive instead.”

There was some laughter from those close by, John’s head lowered slightly. He said to himself, “Yes, payback can be a real bitch.”

They sat there enjoying the evening, the wine and each other.  A waitress came over and handed Mandy an envelope. She explained a man had given her a large tip if she would give this to Mandy.  After leaving her the envelope, he left.

Mandy took the envelope, turned to John and said, “I have no idea.” She could feel there was more than a card inside and she opened it. There was something else. One of the earrings from the set was attached to a note card. Inside the card was written, “If you would like the rest of the set, it is in rm 453, come alone.”

They looked at each other in silence, then Mandy kissed him, stood up and said, “I’ll see you later, baby,” and left John on the patio.
